Koi is a popular aquarium and ornamental pond fish. But not just that! In Japan the Koi symbolism bears strong implications. For the Japanese people, this fish represents precisely strength. The strongest koi swims upstream until it reaches the final waterfall, where it vaults into the mists and becomes a water dragon. Water dragon or dragon fish is another name you can use for Koi in Japan. According to the Japanese legend, if a koi succeeded in climbing the falls at a point called Dragon Gate on the Yellow River, it would be transformed into a dragon. Based on that legend, it became a symbol of worldly aspiration and advancement. More generally, the Japanese associate this beautiful white and orange carp with good luck, prosperity and riches. Maybe that is why it is one of the most popular symbols in the world of tattooing! In certain legends the Koi are used as symbols for jin and jang. Because of its strength and determination to overcome obstacles, koi tattoo stands for courage and the ability to attain high goals. This is the reason why they call it the warrior fish. Koi were developed from common carp in ancient China, later transferred to Korea and Japan, and are still popular there because they are a symbol of love and friendship. People in Japan, Korea and China, therefore, often have this fish in their pond. The carp, with its scale armour, which is regarded as a symbol of martial attributes, is admired because it struggles against the current, and it has therefore become the emblem of perseverance.
